Based upon the strong response and interest in developing new young sailors in the Star Class (“ISCYRA”), the International Governing Committee (“IGC”) has voted to create the U-30 Development Committee. The IGC has also appointed initial members of the Committee as well as a Chairman, Arnd Glunde of Germany, and the IGC will be looking to add more members as the Committee proceeds.
“Last month, I posted a letter encouraging U-30 sailors to race the next World Championships in Marblehead and Scarlino, I also encouraged our existing members to support these efforts. The response was great.” said Tom Londrigan, Chair of the International Governing Committee.
U-30 efforts have been moving forward in Germany, Austria, and Sweden already, with many members of the Star Class donating boats and equipment and participating in formal training sessions to get young sailors off to a head start. The IGC decided that it is time that the Class step forward to help spread these efforts and put more energy and resources into getting the membership involved and invested in developing the next generation of Star sailors.
Recently, the organizers of the 2021 World Championships in Kiel, Germany, collected responses from the competitors as to how best to build our Class. Many of the responses are very helpful and will help establish the mission of the new Committee. “We feel that this issue is important enough to formally create a committee to tackle this challenge and coordinate our efforts.” said Londrigan.
